Substance abuse and driving
Julkaistu 01.07.2005 00.01
Assessing the driving ability of an alcohol and/or drug-dependent patient is considered difficult. Common rules are especially important now that the law in Finland requires physicians to inform the police about permanent deterioration of a patient’s health. Good clinical skills and a neutral attitude are needed while working with these patients who frequently have somatic and psychiatric co-morbidity combined with excessive drug use. Lack of a simple test to evaluate driving ability makes the work even more challenging. This article reviews the effectiveness of treatment programmes among drunken drivers and aims at presenting such practical guidelines for clinical work that protect the doctor-patient relationship without compromising traffic safety.
