English summary: TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES IN THE ELDERLY ARE BECOMING MORE COMMON

The purpose of the study was to examine the incidence and changes in the profile of hospitalized patients with traumatic brain injury in Finland during 1991-2005. The annual incidence increased slightly during 1991-2005. During 2001-2005 it was 104/100 000 inhabitants. The increase in the incidence was mostly explained by the growing number of patients aged 70 years or older with traumatic brain injury (+59.4%) while the incidence in patients younger than 70 years of age decreased (-2.4%).
