Yellow fever makes comeback
Some diseases just won't lie down. The West thought it had tuberculosis licked, but back it has come, with some help from the AIDS virus and its crippling effect on immunity. Now, it seems, yellow fever, "conqueror of armies", a disease that terrorized the American and European seaport populations in the 18th and 19th centuries, killing up to 50 % of its victims after a mercifully few days of bleeding and pain, is also making a comeback.
Epidemics, cases and deaths have in recent years been steadily mounting in tropical Africa, one of the disease's traditional stamping grounds. In the other - Latin America - it was all but wiped out in the first half of this century but the mosquitos that carry the virus have returned in force:
