Apart from the effects of rhythm control therapies, little is known about the impact of atrial fibrillation (AF) on patients’ quality of life. A total of 2274 Finnish patients with AF, 59% of them female, answered a questionnaire. Twenty-nine percent were under 65, 47% were 65-74 and 24% over 75 years of age. Thirteen percent were considered EHRA 1, 52% EHRA 2, 29% EHRA 3 and 6% EHRA 4. Women were more symptomatic (p < 0.001). Eighty-four percent were on oral anticoagulation (OAC) therapy, most of them using a direct oral anticoagulant. Only half of OAC users had pill dispensers. One third of patients did not have regular follow-up visits. Seventy-five percent had visited the emergency room because of AF, including half of asymptomatic patients. Half of the patients felt the support was inadequate. Most of these were insecure about the illness and medication. Fifty-seven percent would like to participate in a rehabilitation programme.

More comprehensive care for AF patients is needed. A rehabilitation programme would be beneficial in management of the causes behind AF, and in providing various types of support.
