Responsibility in specialiased medical care – a survey study at Helsinki University Hospital

Background Responsibility is increasingly relevant in healthcare, however, little research on it has been conducted in Finland. The objective of this study was to determine the current state of responsibility and possible areas for development at Helsinki University Hospital (Hus).

Methods The data were collected through an electronic questionnaire covering the three pillars of the ESG framework, namely environmental, social, governance. The questionnaire was sent to heads of clinics and nurse managers. The questions assessed the attitudes, knowledge, and practices of the respondents. 158 responses were received, with a response rate of 34%.

Results The responses of the two groups of professionals representing different profit units were very similar. Attitudes towards responsibility were positive, however, practices could be improved. Only 34% of respondents knew about the climate road map of the hospital. Social responsibility seemed to be at a good level. The most important aspect of governance responsibility was to make sure that all decisions support the core functions of healthcare.

Conclusions The responses indicate the need to improve communication around responsibility. Increasing discussion on responsibility and improving practical guidance materials could help justify decisions and standardize decision-making.
