English summary: WORK DISABILITY FOR MENTAL HEALTH REASONS IN THE MUNICIPAL SECTOR

Background Disability pensions and sickness absences due to mental disorders are a growing concern. However, evidence is scarce on the trends of work disability due to mental disorders in the Finnish municipal sector.

Methods This analysis is based on the register data in the 10-Town study, coordinated by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. We analysed annual incidence of all forms of diagnosis-specific work disability pensions and long-term (>90 days) sickness absence spells during years 1996-2005. Study population was approximately 50 000 employees each year.

Results The incidence of full time work disability pensions due to mental disorders peaked in 1999 but decreased 1999-2005 from 0,28 % to 0,22 %. The proportion of partial disability pensions of all disability pensions increased 1996-2005 from 3 % to 19 % during the follow-up period. Long-term sickness absence spells increased in all age groups but the strongest increase was found among employees <30 years and 40-49 years of age. The duration of work disability spells due to mental disorders decreased as indicated by a growing number of patients returning back to workforce within a year (53 % and 61 % returned).

Conclusions Although the incidence of long-term sickness absence due to mental disorders has increased, the trend in disability pensions seems to be decreasing. This might be explained by employees' increased probability of returning back to work from a long-term disability spell.

- Aiempaa useampi palaa vuoden kuluessa takaisin työmarkkinoille mielenterveyden häiriöstä johtuvalta työkyvyttömyysjaksolta.
