English summary: COMPARISON OF CARDIOVASCULAR RISK ESTIMATES: THE FINRISK, SCORE AND FRAMINGHAM FUNCTIONS
Background The FINRISK function was developed to estimate cardiovascular disease risk based on the National FINRISK cohort study. The aim of this study was to compare the Finnish risk function with the well-known European SCORE function and the American Framingham function.
Methods Based on the FINRISK 2007 survey, which is representative of the middle-aged population in the five study areas, ten-year cardiovascular risk was calculated among 30- to 64-year-old men and women using the three different risk functions.
Results The average risk in men was 5.7% based on the FINRISK function, 3.5% based on the SCORE function and 13.5% based on the Framingham function, and in women 2.2%, 1.0% and 6.7%, respectively. The 10% risk using the FINRISK function corresponds to a 5% risk using the SCORE function and 20% risk using the Framingham function. The differences between the functions are largely explained by different end points. FINRISK models both mortality and morbidity, SCORE models only mortality and Framingham models mortality and morbidity. The Framingham morbidity data include milder coronary cases while in FINRISK only major coronary events were accepted as end points.
