Background. The National Findiet studies carried out every five years are the primary tool for monitoring the food and nutrient intake of Finnish adults.

Methods. The Findiet 2007 study was part of the FINRISK study: a subsample of 33% of the participants performed a computer assisted 48-hour dietary recall, which uses the software Finessi and the National Food Composition Database Fineli, at the National Public Health Institute. The final dataset consisted of data from 730 men and 846 women whose nutrient intake was calculated.

Results. The percentage of total energy from fat was 33% in men and 31% in women (recommendation 30%). The respective percentages for saturated fatty acids were 13% in men and 12% in women, and those for trans fatty acids 0.4% in both genders (the recommended sum is 10%). Salt intake was higher than recommended, and intake of folates and vitamin D was below the recommendations in both genders. Women´s diet was higher in proteins, dietary fibre and sucrose compared to men.

Conclusions. The intake of saturated fatty acids and salt is still too high, and the intake of folates and vitamin D too low. Higher consumption of whole grains, fish, fruit and vegetables as well as foods with low saturated fat and salt content would improve the situation.
