Most questions to Addictionlinkconcern opioids, benzodiazepinesor rehabilitation
BACKGROUND Approximately 7% of Finns have used sleeping pills, painkillers or sedatives for non-medical purposes. It is believed that in 2020 the misuse of medicinal drugs in Finland will be more common than the use of illegal drugs. The objective of this study was to examine the number, content and background of questions sent to the information service of addictionlink.fi.
METHODS Analysis of the 683 medicine-related questions received by the Addictionlink information service during 2012–2016.
RESULTS 22% of the questions concerned rehabilitation. The most frequently mentioned drug groups were opioids (40%) and benzodiazepines (35%). Of opioids, buprenorphine, and of benzodiazepines, diazepam, were the most frequently mentioned drugs. Concomitant use with alcohol (21%) or illegal drugs (11%) was also common. One third of the questioners were 26–35 years old and more than half were women. In most cases, the questioners lived in the capital area of Finland or other cities with over 50,000 inhabitants.
CONCLUSIONS Support for drug withdrawal, especially from opioids and benzodiazepines is needed. An anonymous web-based information service offers support and guidance for drug withdrawal and care seekers.
