Background We examined the change in the incidence of retirement taken due to disability from 2007 to 2016 in various population groups.

Methods The yearly incidence of retirement due to disability from the earnings-related pension scheme was calculated for the population over 25 years of age with social insurance. The analyses were conducted separately for full and partial disability pensions and broken down into pensions based on mental disorders, musculoskeletal diseases and other somatic diseases.

Results The incidence of retirement due to disability decreased by one quarter between 2007 and 2016 due to a reduction in full disability pensions. The decrease was particularly strong among those aged 45 and over, manual workers, and the unemployed. The decreased incidence among the unemployed alone accounted for forty percent of the total decrease. The changes were similar in all diagnostic groups. In contrast, the incidence of partial retirement due to disability increased. This increase was particularly pronounced among women, persons aged over 55 years and lower-level non-manual employees.

Conclusions The incidence of retirement due to disability has decreased sharply in population groups where it used to be high. If the decline continues despite the increase in 2018, it is unlikely to be as strong as it has been so far.
