Background

The aim of the study was to assess cholesterol-lowering drug use in Finland in 2007 and 2012 in the National FINRISK Study

Methods

A health examination survey was performed in five geographical areas for a random sample of a 35-74-year-old population. The sample size was 4000 in each year. The participation rate in 2007 was 63% in men and 69% in women and in 2012 60% and 64% respectively. Disease rates were self-reported via a questionnaire. Lipid measurements were done in the biochemical laboratory of the National Institute of Health and Welfare.

Results

Lipid-lowering drugs were used by 21% of men and 15% of women. No change was observed during the past five years. Cholesterol concentrations were 5 mmol/l or more in 23% of men and 42% of women who were using lipid-lowering drugs. The drugs were used by 80% of patients with a history of myocardial infarction, 85% with a history of bypass surgery, 90% with stents, 58% with angina pectoris, 53% with diabetes, and 44% with hypertension. No changes in these proportions had occurred in the past five years.

Conclusions

The use of lipid lowering drugs was quite well directed to patients with the greatest need. However, there is still room for improvement in the treatment among patients ovrall and among high-risk groups.
