Hannu AlarantaEija Ahoniemi

Background

Spinal cord lesions are rather uncommon. The aim of the study was to clarify the consequences of a spinal cord lesion in order to have background information for organized life-time care.

Methods

The target group was the patients (N=274) in the catchment area of Helsinki University Hospital who had rehabilitation contact to Käpylä Rehabilitation Centre during the years of 2000-2005. A total of 200 (73%) persons completed the questionnaire concerning bladder, bowel, skin, spasticity, pain, sexual dysfunction, and life satisfaction.

Results

All the respondents reported having at least some disability due to the spinal cord lesion. A total of 62% reported to have at least one major disability. Life dissatisfaction was reported by 19% of the respondents. A strong association was found between disabilities and life satisfaction.

Conclusions

Because of their multiple and severe disabilities a small group of persons with spinal cord lesions urgently needs organized life-time care combining healthcare, rehabilitation and social aspects.
