"A new era in vaccinology"

This was how the New York Academy of Sciences subtitled a scientific meeting held in the second week of April this year on genetic immunization or "naked DNA vaccination," as it is sometimes called. It underscores the revolutionary nature of a discovery made only a few years ago - that genes can be given to people to provide them with a "do-it-yourself" method of producing their own vaccines in their own bodies.
