Most of the genes in the major histocompatibility complex region (MHC, located in chromosome 6p21 of 7.6 Mb and with about 370 gene loci) are involved in adaptive and innate immunity, with essential function in inflammatory reaction and in protection against infections. This region might serve as a candidate gene region for infection and inflammation originated diseases, e.g., coronary artery disease (CAD).
